At the 2016 Census, there were 51,228 people that identified as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ABS 2016) from across these LGAs. This is an increase since 2011.
2016 Census outcomes for the Greater Brisbane Region's Indigenous population also demonstrated an increase in numbers, now totalling 70,735 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people - which is around 10,000 above previous estimates; and represents nearly 40% of Queensland's total Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population.
Based on ABS population projections, Brisbane is also highlighted as a significant growth area, with the region's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population expected to double in size by 2031 - increasing the population number to approximately 120,000.
Key demographic features of our region's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population are largely consistent with broader state and national trends. The population is comparatively youthful in age structure, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander median age ranging between 18 years and a maximum of 25 years across across our targeted LGA jurisdictions.
Across each of the listed LGAs, the average Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander household size is also consistently greater; as well median weekly household income being consistently less.
